“Well, professor, I hate to tell you this, but at the rate we’re going, I’m not sure we’re going to complete the Gay 101 syllabus before the end of the semester. I mean, it’s your class, I’m not the one to tell you what pace to set, but…”

“But you feel like you’re done with remedial frottage and want to move on to intermediate blow jobs?”

Austin laughed. “Something like that. Or butt jobs.”

“Butt jobs?”

“That’s not what they’re called?” His eyes danced. “Brooklyn, it’s your job to teach me the slang all the cool kids are using.”

He leaned in to kiss me and I put a hand on his chest to stop him. Not to push him away, just to look in his eyes for a minute.

“Listen.” I took a breath. “I’m not against all of that. But there’s a reason I’ve been going kind of slow.”

“Because you’re afraid I’m going to freak out about all the gay and run screaming back into the comforting arms of heterosexuality.”

“Something like that.”

“Brooklyn, I’m not—”

“No, listen. What I’m trying to say is, like it or not, if we’re really going to make this whole married thing work, living together and all that, we can’t, like, fuck things up between us. So when I’m taking things slow, it’s because I think it’s best for both of us.”

“Got it. Now take my body and ravish it.”

“You’re absurd.”

“And you’re moving at a snail’s pace, grandpa.” Austin reached out and put a hand on my shoulder. “And you know how I hate being bored.”

He leaned in, my hand still on his chest, and trapped it between us as he pressed his lips to mine. His kiss was hungry, hurried, and I smiled into it. I teased him about it, but I really loved how eager Austin was. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt this wanted by someone.

I considered resisting for a moment. I was tired, still in a bad mood, and Jeff had raised all sorts of questions in my mind about where things stood between the two of us. But then I thought about what I’d be doing if I weren’t kissing Austin right now, and realized that all the alternatives sucked.

Besides, Austin was hot. And Austin was here. Demanding to be paid attention to. I could already feel myself relaxing, knots that I didn’t even know I had unwinding. Austin pushed me backwards into the corner of the couch and straddled me, his knees on either side of my thighs.

I let my hand slide down his chest and smiled. “Where the hell did you even get this apron?”

“I bought it when I realized you didn’t have one. What, you expected me to cook without one? I’m not a heathen, B, please.”

I laughed. “Setting up shop here, huh?”

“Ooh, did I touch a nerve?”

“No. I’m just wondering why we’ve been married for a month, hiding our forbidden love from our families and the combined might of two food storage behemoths, and I’ve yet to come home and find you wearing just this apron.
